Autism Speaks, the charity du jour of the rich and famous, sinks to a disgusting new low in this “public service announcement.” As a self-advocate, I am horrified at the way this piece portrays autism — a natural part of human diversity — literally as a demon. It’s the kind of thinking that has led to the isolation and dehumanization of people with disabilities for millennia. (Seriously, all those “possessed” people Jesus healed? Epilepsy.)
